Now, here's her exclusive interview with UltimateHuman.Org:

What originally inspired you to get into medicine/ health/ wellness?

I was born in Los Angeles, so it's in my "LA DNA" to be into health and wellness.

Growing up in the 70s and 80s, bodybuilding with Jack Lalanne and aerobics with Jane Fonda were just normal parts of life.

But my interest in aging and longevity became more serious when I lost both my parents at a young age. My mom to breast cancer and dad to heart disease.

In my research to try and avoid what I thought was my fate, I found out that we all have a lot more power over aging and disease than we thought.

What’s your favorite part about working in health?

There’s no doubt that the human connection feels so great to me. It’s inspiring to not only help others improve their health, but to learn from so many brilliant human beings at conferences and online.

I am passionate about learning new things. The science of aging is constantly changing and advancing so quickly it amazes and thrills me at the same time.

What are you most proud of in your career so far?

I am proud of going back to school after health coaching for so many years to become a gerontologist when I was 50.

A highlight of my life was graduating with a Masters of Gerontology alongside my daughter who earned her Bachelors of Communication from the same university - The University of Southern California (USC).

What’s something new in health/ wellness you wish more people knew about?

The beneficial impact of having positive beliefs about aging, such as being optimistic about aging, is greater than other factors - like age, physical health, and years of education.

This comes from aging researcher and professor of public health & psychology at Yale University, Becca Levy, PhD:

While looking at the participants of The Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA) — and traveling the world to conduct her own research on aging — she drew many fascinating conclusions about age beliefs.

If you could wave a magic wand and fix something about the modern-day healthcare system, what would it be?

I would change the “sick-care” system into a preventative real healthcare system.

So many lives could be saved and diseases prevented if we encourage people to care for themselves before they get sick.

What are you most excited about in the future of health?

Regenerative medicine.

It’s amazing how we can grow human tissue and have new body parts.

Ideally, I would like this to also include the mind-body connection and show specifically how we can use our brain and mental capacity to heal.

Is there anything else you’d like to add? A message you’d like to share?

If you want to increase your lifespan by 7.5 years, according to Dr. Becca Levy, we can achieve this just by having positive beliefs about aging.

So, get inspired by the many older adults out there who are running marathons, creating new businesses, learning advanced technology, and hacking their age!
